If you’ve just started your blogging career, you might not know how search engines work and how to display your website in the Google search results to drive traffic to your blog.
You can show your website in Google search for free if you can help Google to find your blog.
To do that, you should know about Google Search Console (earlier known as Google Webmaster Tools).
Search Console is a free tool offered by Google which helps you to display your website in Google search results (index or crawl your website).
This tool also helps you to improve the crawling rate of your blog.
All you have to do are a few simple things.
First of all, you’ve to verify in Google Search Console that you’re the owner of the website.
And, the second and most important task is to submit your blog/website sitemapto search console.
Here, I’m going to guide you through step by step methods about how to submit website sitemap to Google webmaster tools.
But, before that we need to understand what actually a sitemap is, and why is it important for your blog to submit a sitemap.
For verifying your website ownership on Search Console, you can refer to this article on Kissmetrics blog.
So, without much further ado, let’s get started.

What is a Sitemap?

As the word sounds, a sitemap is actually a map of your website.
When Google crawlers go around the web indexing new web pages in its database, new blogs are usually missed out as only a few or no sites are linking to them as well as they’re not aware of sitemap thing.
A sitemap is either an XML or HTML file that contains all the URLs of the pages inside your blog.
While HTML sitemap helps your visitors to navigate through your blog, an XML sitemap helps the search engine crawlers the same way.
When you submit an XML sitemap to Google Webmasters, it helps search engine crawlers to find all the URLs on your website and add it to their database.
There are various parts of a sitemap that affect the crawling rate of your blog, such as the size of your sitemap, the number of URLs in your sitemap, indexing priority of pages on your blog, updating frequency, etc.
Now, that you know about sitemap and its importance, let’s move on to the further steps.

Submit Blogger Sitemap To Google
Search Console

Below is the complete process you have to follow in terms to submit your blogspot blog sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools.
This tutorial is divided into 2 parts.
One is for submitting sitemap for blog posts (articles) and another one for submitting sitemap for static pages like contact us, about us, privacy policy etc.
Part - 1
Submitting sitemap for blog posts

Step 1: Sign in to your Google Webmasters Account.
Step 2: Select the desired blog you wish to submit the sitemap for.
Step 3: At the left side of the page, click on Sitemaps under Crawl section.
google-search-console-sitemaps
Step 4: Now, at the top-right corner of the page, click on Add/Test Sitemap button.
Blogger Sitemap Google Search Console
Step 5: Add the below code in the provided text field.
atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=500
This is the sitemap code for your blogger blog that you need to add.
Step 6: Press “Submit Sitemap” button.
Step 7: Refresh the page.
Congratulation! You have finished the process of submitting your blog sitemap.
Note: The above sitemap will work for 500 posts only. If you have more than 500 posts published on your blog, then you have to add one more sitemap.
The Whole procedure will be same, but at this time you have to add this code.
atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=501&max-results=1000
That's it. You are done with submitting the sitemap for blog posts. Now let's move to the 2nd part i.e submitting sitemap for blogspot static pages.
Part - 2
Submitting sitemap for static pages

The sitemap for blogger static pages is completely different from the blog posts.
If you want Google bots to crawl and index your static pages as well, then you must submit a sitemap for them as well.
I have written a complete step-by-tutorial on that as well. Read:
Make sure you read the complete article. You will find some valuable information at the end of the article.

Over to You

This was the step by step guide on how to add Blogger sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools.
Now, it’s your time to try this tutorial and let us know if it was helpful for you or not.
Also, let us know how submitting sitemap to Google webmasters affected your website.
Please share your views with me on the effects of adding the sitemap and let me know in the comments if you need any help in submitting your blog sitemap.

The XML Sitemap file is like a directory of all web pages that exist on your website or blog. Search engines like Google and Bing can use these sitemap files to discover pages on your site that the search bots may have otherwise missed during regular crawling.

The Problem with Blogger Sitemap Files

An complete sitemap file should mention all pages of a site but that’s not the case if your blog is hosted on Blogger.
The default XML sitemap file of any Blogger blog will have only the 26 most recent blog posts – see example. That’s a limitation because some of your older blog pages, that are missing in the default XML sitemap file, may never get indexed in search engines. There’s however a simple solution to fix this problem.

Generate a Complete Sitemap for your Blogger Blog

This section is valid for both regular Blogger blogs (that use a .blogspot.com address) and also the self-hosted Blogger blogs that use a custom domain (like postsecret.com).
Here’s what you need to do to expose your blog’s complete site structure to search engines with the help of an XML sitemap.
  1. Open the Sitemap Generator and type the full address of your blogspot blog (or your self-hosted Blogger blog).
  2. Click the Create Sitemap button and this tool will instantly generate the necessary text for your sitemap. Copy the entire generated text to your clipboard (see screenshot below).
  3. Next go to your Blogger dashboard and under Settings – > Search Preferences, the enable Custom robots.txt option (available in the Crawling and Indexing section). Paste the clipboard text here and save your changes.
And we are done. Search engines will automatically discover your XML sitemap files via the robots.txt file and you don’t have to ping them manually.
Blogger XML Sitemap
PS: If you have
switched from Blogger to WordPress, it still makes sense to submit XML sitemaps of your old Blogspot blog as that will aid search engines discover your new WordPress blog posts and pages.

A Sitemap is nothing but a list of accessible pages in your website. Sitemaps helps search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing to easily crawl pages in your site which helps in better index. As a blogger you must create a sitemap so whenever you make a new post search engines can crawl and index them easily. In this post let’s see how to create sitemap for Blogger blog and submitting it to Google webmaster tools and in robots.txt.

Default Blogger sitemap

By default your blogger blog will have sitemap, but the issue with that sitemap is it only shows your recent blog posts (example). A perfect sitemap is that it should contain the list of all you pages so that search engines know the complete structure of your site. Let’s see how to create sitemap for Blogger blog.

How to create sitemap for Blogger

Creating sitemap is very simple and this sitemap works for both self-hosted Blogger blogs and normal Blogger blogs. Just use this (atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=500)next to your blogs URL. See example below.
http://yourblogname.blogspot.com/atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=500
Now you have created sitemap for your Blogger blog, but you need to tell search engines about your sitemap so that bots can know your site structure. There are two ways to tell search engines about your sitemap.
1. Showing your sitemap in robots.txt file and 2. Submitting your sitemaps in Google webmaster tools

Adding your Blogger sitemap in robots.txt file

Login to your Blogger blog and go to dashboard >> settings >> search preferences and edit the custom robots.txt. Enable and paste the following text and click save changes. Make sure to change your blog name in Blogger sitemap below.
1User-agent: *
2Disallow: /search
3Allow: /
4
5Sitemap: https://adsense-school-seo.blogspot.com/atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=500

So whenever search engines crawls your site they will access your Blogger sitemap from robots.txt file.

Submitting your Blogger sitemap in Google webmaster tools

Login to your Google webmaster tools and select you website. In your site dashboard click sitemaps below. Now click add/test sitemaps, add your sitemap (just the atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=500) and submit your sitemap.
How to create sitemap in Blogger blog
That’s it you have successfully submitted your sitemap in Google webmaster tools. Now it’s ready for crawling and indexing. You can find the number of pages crawled and indexed in Google webmaster tools.

If you like then also submit your Bloggers sitemap to Bing webmaster tools.
Hope this helped you on how to create sitemap for Blogger and submitting it in robots.txt and Google webmaster tools. Please leave your comments below.

In this article we will teach the basics of how to avoid being flagged as spam when sending our newsletters. How to do it? Let’s see it together.
The scenario is utterly common: you send an email and it ends in spam folder. But why does that happen?
The first thing you’ll may notice is a rather weird behavior. When you send emails to Gmail accounts they are correctly delivered, while with Hotmail accounts they’re marked as spam. This suggests the first important consideration: mailbox providers adopt different techniques to decide when an email is or isnt spam. It’s important to underline that this behaviour isn’t limited to the big players: even when you get a personal domain and your provider gives you a mailbox (like stefano[at]thenewsletterplugin.com), there are spam filters in place.
Essentially, everything could be reduced to a simple concept, the spam score. Spam filters take a message and analyze it:
  • Which server does it come from? Is it black listed? What about its reputation?
  • Is that mail server allowed to send emails for the sender domain?
  • What about the content? Has it known spam links?
  • Was the messages signed with a DKIM signature?
  • Is there an SPF or a DMARC record in the domain DNS?
As you can see, some questions contain very technical terms and some of them require specific (and not always easy) configurations to reduce the spam score of sent messages. There could be even a filter on the sender’s provider: for example many hosting providers let blogs send emails but they check them before trying the delivery. Doing this, they aim to prevent hacked blogs from sending tons of spam that may result in a blacklisting of their network.

The minimum checklist to prevent spam – with WordPress

If you’re sending newsletters from your blog without any special configuration, you’re probably sending them from the same server where your blog resides and with a sender email like newsletter@youdomain.com (this is the default on Newsletter).
  1. Be sure the sender email address uses your domain name (in my case the sender is newsletter[at]thenewsletterplugin.com) and make sure that is a real email address or at least an alias. A simple test you may perform: you should be able to send an email to that address without having back a delivery error message. Sometimes, providers don’t allow to set a sender address. Open a ticket to their support to get more information.
  2. Using as a sender address something like myname@gmail.com because you don’t have an email service associated to your domain, almost surely won’t work. See below for a simple explanation. Anyway, considered you’re trying to use your blog to send beautiful and interesting newsletters,  we strongly suggest you to get an email service associated to your domain.
  3. On your blog, set Newsletter with a Return Path email address using a real mailbox you check from time to time: that lets you to have the delivery errors reported. That address can be the same of the sender address. Sometimes providers do not allow the setting of a return path, this is why Newsletter will leave this field empty by default.

If you have an external STMP email service

If you have a mail service (and you should, since you’re using newsletter@youdomain.com which is a real mailbox, right?), you probably have an SMTP available to send emails from your favourite email client. You can try to send email through that mail service (SMTP) which is more spam-proof. Ask the provider your credentials and set them up on Newsletter SMTP settings.
If the SMTP test fails, ask the provider hosting your blog if there are limitations in connecting to external SMTP services. If the provider is the same for both the website and the mail (as it is with Bluehost, Hostgator, Siteground and many more) there should be no blocks in place. Should something not work, open a ticket on their support service.

SPF records

This is a bit technical but it’s worth a mention. An SPF record is something that basically says: emails from @mydomain.com can be sent by that list of servers (SMTP). Modern providers giving you the mail service and an SMTP (see above) should already have those records set for you. Ask them to check that.

Too complicated! Is there a simple solution?

Yes, partially. There are many mail delivery services you can choose from, which deal with most of those problems quite well. For example, we sends our emails with Amazon SES (after Mandrill changed its price scheme) using our Amazon SES Extension (with its one click setup). Sendgrid is cheap and reliable and even Mailgun is a great alternative.
Two important notes:
  1. Those providers could require a few tech configuration on DNS, which your hosting provider should be able to deal with quite easily.
  2. Don’t use free mail delivery services, as almost all of them will process your email with a second class server and the spam problem could be even worse.

Why you shouldn’t use  a Gmail address as sender

If you use as a sender address something like myname@gmail.com, people will see your newsletter from myname@gmail.com. Hence, there is no reason preventing you to use anothername@gmail.com to deliver your email, sending message apparently from another person. This is actually… spam.
To block those kind of dishonest behaviours, more and more mail services started to check incoming emails asking something like: are messages from Gmail allowed to be sent from that server?  If the server you’re sending from isn’t listed in Google allowed servers list, the email will be refused (actually dropped). Of course the same reasoning applies to hotmail.com, outlook.com, yahoo.com.
